Farm friends

When I went to EcoFarm last year I met the folks from Malibu Compost. They really helped put biodynamics in practice for me. Its an easy theory to get behind but the actual practices are specific and hard to understand. There are lots of numbers and application specifics. Anyway, the folks from Malibu Compost were awesome.

Fast forward to making friends on social media and meeting up in person we have become great friends.

Lauren taught our July class at our Second Saturday Market Place class and it was awesome. (Pictures posted here) Matt will be back on the farm for the October class. They are so knowledgeable and willing to spread the good word about composting, brewing tea and soil health.

Aqua Flo delivered a very generous donation from Malibu Compost. EDCO was on hand to help unload.
EDCO delivering the goods to the farm.
Amazing! Biodynamic compost for our farm! Great for building soil and making healthy food for the people.
Potting soil for all our seed starting and transplants. Healthy plants should have a healthy start.

Outdoor classroom on the farm

Hello Long Beach Locals-

Thanks to your support over the last 4 years we have been able to feed hundreds of local residents and get our farm established. This is naturally a long term project and as each growing season passes we learn and improve by leaps and bounds.

Unfortunately we are not able to have our retail store open weekly. Honestly our farm just does not produce enough. Instead we decided to open our Farmstand 59 monthly, thank you everyone who has been coming to these Saturday Market Place mornings. We are offering our fresh produce, eggs, flowers, heritage walnuts, reusable produce bags and other evolving seasonal, local and handmade products.

We also added breakfast, coffee and music to the morning. Our vendors are farm friends and everyone follows the same principals as we do. Everyone uses local and organic ingredients in their fare. Its all small batch and beautifully made. With an awesome soundtrack to top off the morning. This happens every second Saturday from 10-1 in our Farmstand.

A goal since conception of the farm has always been to host classes and students. In June we hosted a raw food demo, July's class was how to make compost tea. I recently did a survey and some future classes will include, flower crown making, chicken keeping, seed starting, bee keeping, irrigation set up, biodynamic preparations and applications and much more. This year we expect the biology students from Milikan to expand their course to include our farm, Camp Fire kids and Bay Shore Pre School just to name a few schools we work with. The interest in our farm is growing along with our knowledge and we would love to share this with you.

Here is the ask: We would like to build a 30' x 40' shade structure on the farm to be able to host classes in the shade. As much as we love the sun its not very forgiving in the summer and let's face it, its always summer. For a $3,000 donation we will be able to build a custom shade canopy that is suitable for the farm. This will allow our visitors to have a shaded structure to relax under while they are attending our farm.

This tax deductible donation will cover the cost of materials and the building of the structure. If you are interested in making it a team building for your employees or a community work day that is also welcome. Many hands make small work and we would love to have you on the farm.

We are very fortunate to have this working farm in such a congested area.  Let's keep expanding and improving your small farm.

Proposed area for outdoor classroom

Shaded area for hosting our students would be a welcome addition
Thank you for your consideration and I hope to hear from you soon.

Dear Long Beach Locals-
We just wrapped up our second year farming on Farm Lot 59. We are starting to get the hang of it. Thank you to all our loyal customers who shopped with us at Farmstand 59 during the season. We will be announcing our 2014 schedule after the New Year. We expect to have our first honey harvest in the spring as well as garlic, fava's and delicious leeks!
This winter we will be building some much needed infrastructure as well as expanding our orchard. If you have resources for either of these please let us know. We can always use lumber and building supplies and we have room to plant another 100 trees! Please contact us before coming by with your donations.
We have ambitions plans for 2014. Your support is the single factor that will make those plans a reality. Please donate to Long Beach Local today!

End of the year donations and Thanks!

Dear Long Beach Locals-
November marked our one year anniversary farming on Farm Lot 59. It was a tough but amazing year. We battled rabbits, hawks, beetles, bugs, drought but still managed to come out a success. We harvested over 1000lbs of heirloom tomatoes out of just 3 little rows. We focus a lot on soil health and it shows in our crops.
We have ambitions plans for 2013. Your support is the single factor that will make those plans are reality. Please donate to Long Beach Local today!

If you make a gift of support today, here's what we can accomplish in 2013.
  • Help us to replenish our seed bank for 2013
  • Finish building our Farmstand 59 so we can sell our produce directly to the public
  • Build more planter beds along the sloping walls
  • Fix a drainage problem we are having due to compacted soil
  • Purchase a much needed tractor to help with farm work
  • Purchase more egg laying hens (there are never enough eggs!)
  • Expand our educational program to be able to host more groups
  • Build a covered structure so we can have classes and groups come even if its raining
At Farm Lot 59 we are dedicated to providing Long Beach with pesticide free, non-GMO, organically grown produce. By supporting the farm you are supporting a local business and keeping your tax deductible donations right here in the community. Become a member today for $25 or donate at any level. We appreciate the support.

See you on the farm.

Thank you!

Hello Long Beach Locals-
Last Thursday's event at Keesal, Young and Logan was fantastic. I appreciate all the work Justin Hectus did to make this a successful event. Everyone enjoyed the music from The Moonsville Collective and the food was fantastic. Justina from Shortnin Bread, produce from Aliye at beachgreens, chicken from Dave and Heather at New Frontier Family Farms and cheese and wine from Venissimo and the Organic Cellar. I'm telling you, next time we have a party you should come.
We were able to raise a sizable amount of funds but did come up a little short to fund our fence. If you were unable to attend but would still like to donate anyway please visit the website and click the Donate button on the side bar. All donations are tax deductible under our 501(c)3 non-profit status.
Our community work day on Saturday was awesome. We were able to plant everything in our greenhouse, reseed where the rabbits wiped us out and start more seeds in the greenhouse. The cycle continues.
At our June 9th work day I would like to paint our chicken coop. If you are interested in designing something fun let me know. Its a great coop but a little bland let's perk it up for the happy hens.
Thanks and see you on the farm.

Its a party on May 10th. Come support the farm!

May 10th shindig is coming up quick

I'm really looking forward to our party at Keesal Young and Logan next Thursday, May 10th. We have extended the rsvp until this Friday May 4th. This event is being donated by KYL to help us raise money for a much needed fence. If you have been following us on facebook or the blog you saw the damage the critters have done to the farm. The coyotes and wild dogs have eaten our hens, the rabbits have eaten our seedlings and the gophers are giving me a straight up headache.

On to the party! The Moonsville Collective will be playing an acoustic set. Click on the link to watch a great video. Venissimo cheese shop will be there with their product. We might have a few other local partners popping up with some delicious treats. KYL's Chef Will will be preparing a wonderful menu of in season delights and The Organic Cellar is on board to pour some organic and biodynamic wine for you.

This is going to be a great event for our wonderful little farm. Please come and make a tax deductible donation to Long Beach Local and help Farm Lot 59 keep on keeping on. Once we are able to safely get our crops in the ground we will be able to sell this beautiful produce to you. We have weekly produce boxes available for sale along with eggs from our hens and honey from our bee hives. You can read more about that on our site under Farm Lot 59 or come to the party and ask all the questions.
If possible rsvp by tomorrow May 4th. See you on May 10th.

Thanks so much-
