We are looking for your year end support!

Farm lot 59 04

My mother was born and raised in Iowa on a farm that her father ultimately lost during the Great Depression. The family moved back into the city to live with her grandmother – her mother's mother – and then her father died suddenly at the age of 52 when she was only nine years old. My mother is 82 now, and still talks about her early childhood of living on that farm.

In Long Beach, the fifth largest city in California, in a sprawling city of 500,000 people, sits a small urban farm called Farm Lot 59. I had heard about the farm and farmer Sasha Kanno through some of the restaurants I represent as the founder of Dine LBC – Long Beach Restaurant Week. Remembering my mother's stories and memories she continues to share, I wanted to know more. I wanted to know more… and then I wanted to get involved.

When I discovered that Farm Lot 59 not only grows delicious, organic produce for local restaurants I frequent but is an actual Living Classroom that gives our "city kids" a unique opportunity that they would not likely get to experience if it wasn't for Sasha's commitment, hard work and perseverance. But she can't do it alone. Farm help, volunteers and most of all donations are needed to keep it going and build on her vision.

Consider giving monthly to Farm Lot 59. It helps us to sustain our farm community. We can plan and feel our budget is secure. We are looking for year end support from you.

Come visit the farm this spring, take a tour. Ask questions. Then rest easy that your donation will go toward something small but great: the continuation of Farm Lot 59's Living Classroom that can be enjoyed by everyone of Long Beach and surrounding areas, providing memories that will last a lifetime.

Thank you,
Terri Henry
Board of Directors

We have come so far and we continue to farm because of YOU!

When we started Farm Lot 59 in 2010 it looked like this, an illegal dump in an otherwise unused piece of city land. Since those humble and crazy beginnings we have done so much our our little 1/2 acre that I didn't even realize was possible.

We have taught 1000's of people the importance of small scale agriculture and have grown our community 10 fold. We continue to be better farmers, stewards of the land and openly share all of this knowledge with you.

Help us this giving season to continue our work at Farm Lot 59. Urban farming is the wave of the future but our future is now. This truly is a community farm and we need you to help us keep farming it.

Your tax deductible donation supports the work we do, future programs and awesome farm events.

In gratitude,
Sasha Kanno
