Volunteer Spotlight. Karissa Perez   How did you find FL59?   I had FL59 on my radar for some time after seeing their market bouquets and produce being delivered to the community through Maritime Bicycle Courier, a local delivery service.     What made you curious enough to come and check out the farm?   At that time I was actively seeking local and organic flower/produce farms so that I can offer my hands and labor to the land and have an opportunity to learn each key ingredient to becoming a successful farmer.    Did you have much experience before you started volunteering?   My background in floristry further expanded my interests in farming and the importance of supporting our local growers dedicated to organic methods. I have also been volunteering at various organic farms through the world wide opportunities on organic farms (wwoof) organization.    What brings you back every week?   Watching the day to day transformation of life on the farm guided by the hard work of the community is its own form of art and love that is very rewarding to experience and contribute to. Every week brings new challenges and insights that have gifted me personal growth of many forms.    Why is community important to you?   Every aspect of life is connected and our community is fundamental to creating the world we live in. I feel that a healthy and wholesome community is able to sustain itself and all its members. Providing our time, energy and labor to the collective needs of the community is vital so that we may all thrive together.    Tell us a little about you - age, education, hometown.   I live in Pico Rivera, an area surrounded by natural reserves, riverbeds, lakes, canyons and woodlands. It is home to a diversity of wildlife and is the place that harbored my love and connection to the natural world and guided me in my life’s work of tending to and restoring our lands. It seems redundant to say that 2020 has been a challenge for all of us. When our restaurant partners began the roller coaster ride of opening and closing back in March we quickly shifted gears and started making meals for the residents in transitional housing at the Elizabeth Ann Seton House. When Seton House had to reduce capacity due to the pandemic, we again adapted. We are now also providing prepared meals and raw produce to our neighbors at the 14th Street Community Center, which serves as a food pantry for anyone in need in the community.    In a typical year we host three big parties at the farm. Farm Lot Eats is our annual fundraiser where we hold a silent auction and all our wonderful restaurant partners make unique dishes from the farm's bounty along with music and cocktails. We also host two Roast events that are more like a concert in the park style event where we welcome you to the farm for food and music and to simply enjoy the farm that you love and support all year.   We also host community workshops on topics that range from health, gardening, natural crafts, and food policy. We host scouts, youth engagement projects, weekly volunteers, and workforce development. This year, in contrast, we have been limited to small, socially-distanced volunteer days where dedicated volunteers have donated their time to help us maintain the farm and continue feeding those in need.   More stories will be coming from us about the good work we are doing and what having a farm in your community really means. If you have any stories to share about your time on Farm Lot 59 we would love to hear them and welcome you to send them to us.    We continue to stand by until we are able to welcome you to your farm again know that we are still here and are missing you terribly. We hope 2021 will be the change we all need as we adapt to what will be the new normal. Fresh Local Flowers for Thanksgiving  PICK UP LOCATION CHANGE. WE WILL MEET YOU AT THE FARMSTAND FOR YOUR PRE-ORDER PICK UP.    Last call for fresh flowers in 2020. This weeks market bouquets are full of mums, celosia, zinnias, amaranth and olive. Each bouquet is perfect to put in a vase or disassemble to make a few smaller arrangements, everyone loves flowers!    This order is for pick up on Tuesday, November 24th from 4-6pm at the Farmstand.
