We need you! Seeking volunteer coordinator

We love our volunteers!
Volunteer coordinator is a very important role on our farm. This person is responsible for managing groups of volunteers as well as individual members of the community. You must have strong communication and management skills since you will be working with many different kinds of people.

This position would be ideal for someone interested in coordinating events, working with youth, families, environmental education, health and nutrition education, and sustainable gardening. We are looking for positive individuals who follow through, are self-motivated and can work independently. Volunteer Coordinator is the key person that introduces people to our farm who have most likely not visited us before.

The valuable experiences you will gain in this field complement studies in nonprofit, healthcare and social services.

Fall Farm happenings...

pictureFarm Lot 59, a 501(c) Urban Farm located at 2714 California Ave in Long Beach, would like to invite you and your group to visit us this school year. On our farm we grow fruit, flowers, vegetables, herbs. We have hens for eggs and beehives for honey collection. We farm using organic and biodynamic methods without the use of pesticides or herbicides. Our farm is very unique and would love to share it with you.

Once a month we welcome our Little Weeders (ages 3 to 7) or our Germinators (ages 8 to 10) to the farm. Once you confirm your date we will coordinate with you to design your visit. Depending on your interest and ability we can do a lesson on seed starting, composting, vermicomposting or story time. We are asking for a $5 donation per person for this activity.

Little Weeders is a hands on program designed for ages 3 to 7.  Children are exposed to seed starting composting and vermicomposting. They learn how to take care of seeds, what makes a seed happy, how to be a good farmer to a seed.  They use fine motor skills and listening skills. They learn the difference between dirt and healthy soil.  Children learn just how important little worms actually are.  At the closing of the filed trip is a time of reflection. Children enjoy story time at the farm.

Germinator’s are our slightly older kids age’s 8 to 10 our program touches on the practical application of science and math. Students learn about germination.  They explore the different ways to take care of seeds.  Students will discover just how important ratios and following procedures can be.  Composting and vermicomposting call for critical thinking.  Students discover that there is so much more to soil than just dirt!

During the time of reflection students will have an opportunity to journal about their experience on the farm.  The farm is an inspiring place to write.

We are so excited for this new opportunity to share our farm with you and your students. Our hope is that all children who visit the farm become connected to their local farm and have a deeper understanding of where their food comes from. If desired teachers may request activities to take with them to further inspire students.

Please view the available dates below and apply online at www.farmlot59.org and see you on the farm!
