Do you have one last gift in you?

Dear Long Beach Locals-

Agriculture has been in the news a lot lately on the local and national scale. A 2008 proposition (2) is finally coming into law. It will abolish the close confinement of farm animals in cramped cages and crates.  At Farm Lot 59 we didn't need a law to tell us how to treat our animals. We treat them with utmost love and respect. You will never find our animals in a cage or living in cramped conditions.

We treat our farm as a living organism and try our best to farm in harmony with nature. We appreciate you when you spend your food and donation dollars with us. It makes it possible for us to show this example of sustainable farming to Long Beach. Its a farm in the city where we live when land for agriculture is so scarce.

By supporting our farm we are able to teach sustainability and biodynamic growing methods to our community and do our best to promote the "grow your own" movement. In 2015 we hope to grow these efforts even more.
  • Ensuring fresh local produce is produced in Long Beach
  • Provide our visitors with the knowledge of where their food comes from and how to grow it responsibly
  • Educate our youth on how to make healthy food choices
  • Make our farm a space where community members can come and make meaningful relationships
We at Farm Lot 59 believe the connection to food is something that can transform lives. Let's make 2015 a powerful year!

Please use this opportunity to donate one last time to Long Beach Local. You can donate online here.

Thank you for your continued support.

2014 is a wrap...almost

Hello Long Beach Locals-

This year has been such a wonderful journey on the farm. We have hosted over 100 school kids from Long Beach Unified and the surrounding South Bay. We held classes on composting, crafting, chicken keeping and seed starting. For many of you it was the first time you have seen chickens in a happy and natural environment. We are your local urban farm and we hope you are loving this resource.

We are throwing our hat in the ring for your donation dollars. We need to reach our financial goals for 2014 and still have a way to go. Your donation dollars are what is going to help us keep farming in the new year.

We hope we have made an impact on your life during the 4 years we have been farming at Farm Lot 59. Our mission is to enrich the lives of the community and educate you on sustainability.

Your donation dollars will help us keep farming in 2015 and help to hire some farmers to be able to teach more classes and have more schools participate in our seed to plate experience.

You can contribute one time or recurring, its all very much appreciated.

Sincerely,
Sasha Kanno

Happy Holidays from your urban farm!

Hello Long Beach Locals-

I hope everyone is having a lovely holiday season. It seems like it was summer and now its winter. We are so thankful for the 2" of rain last week. Keep it coming and we will be happy to urn our irrigation off for the season. Hopefully you were able to load up on free mulch from the site and get your gardens to bed in time. Hopefully next year we can have more classes on this topic and help you find your inner successful gardener.

We would like to thank all our loyal customers who visited Farmstand 59 during our Second Saturday Market Place. We love you and can't wait to host you again on March 14th. If you have suggestions or feedback how we can make these market days better please email us.

We still have a few slots left for our wreath making class this Saturday the 13th from 10-1. Last years class was so fun and everyone left with very unique beautiful custom wreaths. Pictures on our fb from that class. You can purchase tickets through Eventjoy.

Our new website is up and running. Huge thanks to Andy from beachgreens for putting it together for us. It might still have a few glitches but its looking amazing. Easy access to tickets, events, and what's happening. There are more pictures to be posted please check it out here http://farmlot59.org/  and start using that web address from now on.

One last thing to tell you about. This Sunday the 14th we are hosting a fundraiser for Long Beach Creamery. Dina is a neighbor and friend and we need to help her reach her Kickstarter goal. Join us on the farm from 1-3 (auction at 2:30) to support this small business. More info here or email us back.

Thanks again for supporting urban agriculture and small business in Long Beach.

Farm Lot 59 Second Saturday Market Place this Saturday Oct 11th

Hello Long Beach Locals-

Fall is in the air although its kinda hard to tell with the constant high temperatures. Hopefully we will get a break in the heat soon as us poor farmers need a little relief. I would like to welcome our new batch of work-share volunteers. They are already getting in the groove planting new crops, learning composting methods and learning the lay of our small land. I'm excited to work with them this season and hope to teach them everything they want to know. If you missed out we will be taking applications again in January for February commitment.

I would like to thank Signal Hill Petroleum for the generous donation of another shade house. This time we are building one that will be used as a classroom and outdoor seating space on the farm. We love being their neighbors in the gulch and am so happy for this new addition on the farm. Instead of a class this month we decided to work together as a team and build this structure. Friday we will be pouring concrete and Saturday working to erect the frame work. If you would like to volunteer come down to the farm at 9am on Saturday morning to help.

Since we will have shade we have also added a few November and December classes to the calendar. Succulent Wreath Class and the Holiday Class. Last year we had so much fun and get crafty. This year we expect to do the same. The link for Eventjoy is on our website and I'll be posting about it again soon.

This Saturday the 11th Wide Eyes Open Palms will be pouring fresh brewed coffee, tea and serving seasonal pastries. Our very own The Lady Farmer will be serving breakfast using farm fresh ingredients and freshly baked bread. Long Beach Creamery will be here with jam, jelly and all sorts of sweet treats. Make sure to ask Dina what's happening with her brick and motor location (maybe bring her a beer too, stressful!) Our newest addition is Petersen Pottery Company little whiskey and baby bowels made in Eagle Rock. Sara and I have been friends for years and I'm so happy to support her talents. All of these folks are making small batch specialty products for your enjoyment. Come and support them on the farm.

See you Saturday on the farm!

Thank you Lisa Wibroe

I would like to bid a fond farewell to departing Long Beach Local board member Lisa Wibroe. Lisa served 2 two year terms with us and was integral in helping me form LBL and securing the lease for our farm.

Lisa and I met in 2007 when we bought our house in the Wrigley neighborhood. She was involved in a grassroots tree planting group Wrigley is Going Green. Her, Mauna and Lee organized tree plantings, maintenance and community events surrounding tree plantings in our neighborhood. When city council approached her to start a community garden in our neighborhood she passed that torch to me. I was already doing a front porch fruit and produce exchange and it seemed like a good next step.

I was a new homeowner and didn't know anything about local politics. She held my hand and gave me late night pep talks to get me through the process. Lisa served on the Sustainable City Commission and was a homeowner in our neighborhood already for 20 years.

Lisa is an artist, mother, wife, neighbor, gardener and friend. I love her and appreciate everything she has done for me and helping me get going on my path to local agriculture. She will be missed on our board but I know I will see her around the neighborhood and that makes me happy.

You can find her here http://lbopenstudiotour.com/

Thanks again Lisa, we wish you the best of luck.

xoxo

Farm friends

When I went to EcoFarm last year I met the folks from Malibu Compost. They really helped put biodynamics in practice for me. Its an easy theory to get behind but the actual practices are specific and hard to understand. There are lots of numbers and application specifics. Anyway, the folks from Malibu Compost were awesome.

Fast forward to making friends on social media and meeting up in person we have become great friends.

Lauren taught our July class at our Second Saturday Market Place class and it was awesome. (Pictures posted here) Matt will be back on the farm for the October class. They are so knowledgeable and willing to spread the good word about composting, brewing tea and soil health.

Aqua Flo delivered a very generous donation from Malibu Compost. EDCO was on hand to help unload.
EDCO delivering the goods to the farm.
Amazing! Biodynamic compost for our farm! Great for building soil and making healthy food for the people.
Potting soil for all our seed starting and transplants. Healthy plants should have a healthy start.

Market Place this Saturday!

Hello Long Beach Locals-

Reminder if you are interested in attending our seed starting class this Saturday please rsvp by replying to this email or on our facebook event page.

Class starts at 11 on the farm. Please be prepared with a hat and flat shoes. This is a hands on seed starting and gardening 101 class. We will show you different methods, seed selection and what medium to use. You will take home a packet of Baker Creek Heirloom seeds and a milk weed plant for your home garden.

Cost is $10 and rsvp is required. Please see Alicia at the Farmstand Saturday morning for payment.

We are also currently accepting Fall 2014 work-share applications. Blanks are available in the Farmstand or you can download here...work-share. We ask for a 2 day commitment, 3 hours each shift. You day choices are Monday, Tuesday or Friday. Please commit to the same day every week so we know how to schedule the work. Sorry for all the 9 to 5ers. We do have occasional Saturday work days and you are welcome to attend any of those. Application deadline is the 15th. We will have orientation on the 18th and make our selection right away. Thanks for all of you committed to help keeping agriculture in the LBC.

See you this Saturday!

-Sasha Kanno

Lastly I have great news for all my egg eaters. I found a better deal on organic grain and am lowering the price to $9 dozen. If you are a annual member of Long Beach Local you get 10% off all purchases and that makes your eggs $8 doz and that is a screaming deal. Eggs comparable to ours are typically $1each. Yes, each egg. I want to be able to provide eggs at a reasonable cost but the price of organic non-gmo grain is insanely expensive. So for now that's the best we can do.

Thanks again. We love you and thanks so much for the support. See you on the farm AUGUST 9TH.

-Sasha Kanno
