Farm Lot 59 and Restauration Partner to Host Urban Brunch Series Fundraiser

If you can't see this e-mail properly, view it online
In 2010, Sasha Kanno’s vision for a local food source became a reality when she transformed what used to be a trash dump in the Willow Gulch area into a one-acre biointensive farm. For more information about Kanno and Farm Lot 59’s beginnings, read the Long Beach Post article here.

With the farm’s first harvest in June of 2012, Farm Lot 59, also known as Long Beach Local, an agriculture-based 501(c)3 nonprofit, has grown to focus on training farmers and educating residents about urban farming, while at the same time providing several restaurants and retailers in the City with fresh food.

The organization houses pastured hens for egg production, grows vegetables, fruit and edible flowers without using pesticides, herbicides or chemicals. Farm Lot 59 provides jobs and practices organic and biodynamic principles with the ultimate goal of making a difference in the local and global community, by strengthening the connection between farmer and consumer.

The nonprofit is now in need of an upgrade to continue providing Long Beach with a sustainable food option and has partnered with Restauration to host an “Urban Brunch” series, the second of which will take place on Sunday, April 26, the third on May 17 from 11:00AM to 2:00PM, to raise funds to upgrade the organization’s greenhouse, replenish its seedbank for 2015 and to continue upkeep and maintenance through the spring.

“Considering we supply produce to several restaurants and retailers in Long Beach, our greenhouse is in desperate need of upgrading,” Farm Lot 59 founder Sasha Kanno said in a statement. “We’re excited to offer this unique way to raise the funds needed to rebuild it by presenting a delicious brunch that neighbors, friends and family can take part in.”

Dana Robertson, owner of Restauration, added, “We have been buying produce from Farm Lot 59 since we opened last year and are proud to support this small farm.”

The three-course, farm-to-table style brunch will be curated and prepared by Restauration’s Chef Erick Simmons and served under the canopy on the Farm Lot 59 property. The menu will feature fresh eggs, produce and herbs provided by the lot, alongside sustainable seafood and artisan breads donated by family-owned businesses Ingardia Brothers and Crema Café. Seasonal sangria, craft beer and mimosas will be served with the meal.

According to the announcement, an additional “Urban Brunch” series at Farm Lot 59 will be hosted during the fall harvest season, as well.

Tickets are $65 for Farm Lot 59 members and $75 for non-members. Space is limited and tickets can be purchased on Restauration’s website here. To for the most up-to-date information, visit the Facebook event page, here.

Farm Lot 59 is located at 2714 California Ave. For more information, please call (562) 230-7207 or visit the website here.

Farm happenings...

We are so excited for the next brunch in our 3 part series. This month we are featuring the last of what spring has to offer before we jet right past to summer.

Farm Lot 59 along with Restauration invite you to join us for a meal on the farm!

The funds generated from this event are helping us rebuild our greenhouse. Having a greenhouse allows us to grow speciality produce only possibly produced from seeds. We only grow the best on our farm. We grow for flavor and what works well in our climate and with as little water as possible!

We are your local farm and we love hosting you for these special events focused on delicious food, great music and connecting with your community.

Have a great Grand Prix and then we will see you on the farm!

Long Beach Local is an official 501(c)3 nonprofit. We are leading the way for agriculture education and awareness here in Long Beach. Help us grow our operation to better serve the community.

Currently we are seeking funds to rebuild our greenhouse. We have outgrown our upcycled version and are making a version 3.0. No mice, rats, bugs or birds will be getting in this time.
If you rather give materials than cash consider a Home Depot gift card, its all appreciated!
We expect to be completed with this by the end of April.
Thank you for the continued support!

Fundraiser Brunch April 26th

Farm Lot 59 and Restauration invite you to join us for part two of our three brunch series. Chef Erick Simmons will announce his hyper-local menu the week of to ensure the freshest seasonal Farm Lot ingredients are used. I can give you a sneak peak and tell you fava, leeks, herbs, farm eggs and some fresh seafood will be on the plate.

The funds generated from this event will help fund the cost of our greenhouse rebuild. We rely on produce sales and community events to help cover the upkeep and maintenance costs of our small farm. We aim to be a focal point in your local food movement by producing organic produce, heirloom flowers, pastured eggs, education and training for our local citizen farmers.

There are load of fun pictures on our facebook. Bring a friend, have some great food on the farm while listening to live music. All for a great cause. Sounds like an amazing Sunday to us!

Thanks and see you on the farm!

Farm happenings...

Join us this Saturday for a community event! We have partnered with Long Beach City College Child Development to host and celebrate the Week of the Young Child! On April 11th from 10-12 we invite you for a farm tour, seed starting, book readings and more. Tour starts at 10:00 AM, $5 suggested donation. All the other activities geared towards young children ages 2-8 years old are free! The purpose of the WOYC is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs at the local, state, and federal levels.

The WOYC is a time to plan how we, as citizens of a community, state, and nation will better meet the needs of all young children and their families. Please wear farm friendly attire, flat shoes, hat, water and sunscreen are suggested. The farm has a no pet policy, please leave yours at home.

Seeking Volunteer Coordinator!

Volunteer coordinator is a very important role on our farm. This person is responsible for managing groups of volunteers as well as individual members of the community. You must have strong communication and management skills since you will be working with many different kinds of people.

This position would be ideal for someone interested in coordinating events, working with youth, families, environmental education, health and nutrition education, and sustainable gardening. We are looking for positive individuals who follow through, are self-motivated and can work independently. Volunteer Coordinator is the key person that introduces people to our farm who have most likely not visited us before. Interest in local food is growing and we need YOU!

The valuable experiences you will gain in this field complement studies or careers in nonprofit, healthcare and social services.
