We all love a fresh bouquet of flowers on the kitchen table or the scent of roses on an evening walk in our neighborhood, but what do we really know about flowers? I once had a friend who used to giggle and say, "flowers are plants' sexy parts." And it's true, flowers are the reproductive organs of plants. Male flower parts are called stamens and produce pollen. Female flower parts are called pistils and they recieve the pollen and produce seeds. The bottom part of the pistil is called the ovary and often ripens into a sweet fruit that serves to keep seeds protected and also to entise animals to spread her seeds far and wide. Flowers come in all shapes, sizes, colors and scents. But did you know that some flowers are both male and female? Actually, most flowers have both the male and female parts on the same flower. Most flowers we can picture in our minds have both male and female parts together. This is called a perfect flower. Some flowers hold the male and female flower parts on seperate flowers (some on the same plant and others on completely different plants). Flowers that don't have both parts together include squash, corn, and kiwis. Botany is a wonderful and exciting world! There is so much diversity and so much to learn! |
