2nd Saturday Work Day this Saturday.
Hello Long Beach Locals-
Reminder that this Saturday is our monthly 2nd Saturday work day. We will be prepping the farm for spring planting, making soil blocks and working in the greenhouse. If you want to learn how to successfully start seeds for your home garden this is the work day for you.
We will also have Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds for sale from our seed rack. All seeds are $2.50 and have been selected by me to be ready to plant now. Your summer garden will be beautiful and original if you use these seeds. They are from a family farm in Missouri and have led the seed saving movement and the fight against non-GMO's. By buying these seeds you are not only supporting our small farm but you are supporting the work of Baker Creek.
The farm is busy with spring energy and we are gearing up to open Farmstand 59 next month. We are still looking for a Saturday volunteer to work in the store. If you are interested in this please email me.
Thanks for supporting local agriculture.

2nd Saturday Build Day this Saturday.
Hello Long Beach Locals-
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. We took a much needed vacation and am back full force this week tilling and prepping beds for spring. Thank you to Signal Hill Petroleum for the generous Honda tiller donation. This is hopefully going to help us solve a drainage issue we have. Also thank you to everyone who donated to Long Beach Local, our non-profit your tax deductible donations help us keep on keeping on.
Our super awesome and really cool Farmstand 59 was open weekend before Christmas. Thanks to everyone who shopped with us. I hope you all made some delicious food to share with your family. We will not be open again until spring. I am currently looking for someone who is interested in working in the store either 1 or 2 days a week. Friday's and Saturday's. Please email me if you are interested in hearing more about that.
This Saturday is our monthly work day. We are going to be putting the finishing touches on our Farmstand as well as doing a little chicken maintenance. We need to move the coop and give them a little love. If you are interested in backyard chicken raising this is a good work day for you. We will also be BBQn' around 1 or so. Please bring something to throw on the grill for yourself or to share.
Thanks again for supporting our little farm in the city. See you Saturday 9-3.

The mulch yard will also be open during the work day hours. Bring a shovel and bucket and help yourself. Its been raining already but its not too late. Good thing about moving mulch after a rain is there is no dust!

Build day this Saturday!
Hello Long Beach Locals-
This Saturday from 8-3 on the farm we will be building our farm stand. Simon Glover graciously donated the design and other fabulous donors have contributed materials and tools, we are ready to rock!
We have already plotted it out, laid the concrete footings and are ready for framing. I would love to get it framed all in one day. Even if you do not have experience building you are more than welcome to come help. We had a great time building the greenhouse and teaching basic construction skills in the process. If you have a favorite tool; screw gun, saw, hammer please bring it.
Please please please bring water, a hat and some food. Its hot and dirty on the farm and the work is hard many people come unprepared and its just not safe.
Hope to see you Saturday to help build our Farmstand 59!
Thanks-
Sasha

Good times on 2nd Saturday
This past weekend was our monthly workday. As always we appreciate the help in keeping up with our farm chores. Last weekend we prepped more beds for fall planting. Sifted compost, tweaked irrigation, set some traps and had a delicious BBQ.
Thanks to Ashley our super awesome volunteer for leading the Camp Fire Girls in our first official workshop. Looked like they had a great time.
Our farm is growing and its all because of you.
See you at our party on Sept 22nd!

Build Day this Saturday and a Party!
Hello Long Beach Locals-
This weekend is our monthly 2nd Saturday Build Day. We will be at the farm from 9-3.
This month we are finishing up our new chicken coop. In January we were the proud parents of a fresh batch of baby chicks. Jennifer raised them at home until they were ready for the big time. We brought them out to the farm and let them loose with the big hens last months. The ACE program at Jordan High School build us a brand new chicken coop to house the ladies. Now we just need to finish it up.
People with building skills are welcome but please come down even if you are mechanically challenged. There are plenty of farm chores to be done and its a great opportunity to visit the farm and see what's been going on.
We fire up the grill and break for lunch around noon. If you are interested please bring something to throw on the grill, your own utensils, plates etc. If you care to bring something to share you are also welcome to do that.
If you are interested in composting but are unable to do it at home you are welcome to bring your compost to the farm. You can keep a small container on your counter to collect your kitchen scraps and keep a larger 5- gallon bucket under your sink or outside. There are various lids for the buckets that will keep the stink in and the critters out. When you come to the Build Day or to any of our work days (Wed & Fri 9-3) you are welcome to bring your waste. I'll show you where to dispose of it and how to turn the pile. Its a little bit of work but its helping us build our soil and reducing the waste that goes into our garbage. You are also welcome to bring yard clippings and other green waste. It needs to be pesticide and chemical free and chopped into 1" to 2" pieces. Click this link for a list of things you can compost. And as always help yourself to the mulch pile.
I also wanted to tell you about an exciting event coming up on May 10th. Keesal, Young and Logan have generously offered to help us raise money for a much needed fence. We will be snacking on locally sourced delights, drinking fine beverages and listening to some fun music. It should be a good time downtown.
If you are interested in attending this fundraising event or making a donation please email me @ sashakanno@mac.com or mail 2076 Eucalyptus Ave. Long Beach, Ca 90806 and note "fence fundraiser" in the memo box.
See you on the farm.

Farm Lot 59- Build Day this Saturday
Hello Long Beach Locals-
This weekend is our monthly 2nd Saturday Build Day. We will be at the farm from 9-3.
This month we are wrapping up our greenhouse and starting seeds!
Over the last few months we have been rebuilding our greenhouse. Back in December it was destroyed by a freak wind storm. Kathleen Irvine and Jim Danno saw the devastation and offered up some salvaged windows for our use. With the help of our Build Day crew we have been able to build a new one. The structure is complete but we still need to fix our tables, install and hang our irrigation and get those seeds started.
Its best if you are able to come at the beginning of the event and stay the entire day. If you have to leave early that is ok too, we would still love to have you. Even if you are not mechanical you are still welcome to come and lend a hand. There are always farm chores to get done. If you plan on bringing your kids to the farm please read the children on the farm portion on our website.

Greenhouse build this Saturday the 11th
Hello Long Beach Locals-
This weekend is our monthly 2nd Saturday work day. We will be at the farm from 9-3 working hard to get the farm ready for spring planting.
This month we are rebuilding our greenhouse, part 2. Last month we laid the foundation (sturdy and level) and now we are ready to build the walls, hang some doors, roofing, skirting, hinges, fix the tables, hang the irrigation and hook it up. I cannot wait until this is up and running. My greenhouse is the heart of my entire operation. I choose all my seeds carefully and can't wait to watch them grow. The new farm is in a very dry and hot location, be interesting to see how to farm down there.
