The State of Farm Lot 59 Hello Long Beach Locals and supporters of Farm Lot 59. I wanted to give a brief update on the farm and what our plans are for 2019. So far its turning out to be a great year. Cooler temps and rain has been a nice change of pace although I'm anxious for longer days and warmer nights so the fields can get planted. Its our "off season" which means I can focus on a few projects that never seem to happen when we are in the thick of things. Upgrading the greenhouse benches and finally getting electrical to the farm are my top priorities. I've also been studying a lot on how to work as efficiently as possible and simplify things. I think all the planning is going to pay off this year. We've added some new tools to our shed and some innovative systems are being developed that are geared toward small scale farming and I'm soaking it all in. Farm Lot 59 has a few new community partners too. We are welcoming back our CSULB Service Learners but also excited to work with Jr. League & Villages of Cabrillo. We will be hosting field trips, family field days, volunteer opportunities, free workshops, a few parties and some plant sales. So many chances for you to come visit your local farm. Check the site, fb and instagram for updates. Sometimes I don't have a chance to put together a whole newsletter but try and post as far in advance as possible. After much thought and discussion with my family Farmstand 59 will not be returning this year. The farmstand has been open on and off since 2013 in many different forms and I keep trying to make it work but the numbers just don't add up. The stand needs a fiscal sponsor and a team to run the retail store. I strongly believe that people should be able to come to their local farm and purchase locally grown fruits, veggies and other delicious products and will keep trying to find a successful model for it to work. If you know of a larger organization who might be interested in a conversation please let me know. As always please support our restaurant partners. Without them we wouldn't be able to pay the bills. Chianina, ROE, Panxa, the 4th Horseman We love you and am so thankful you are buying local and supporting your local farmer. So that's it for now. If you are coming to the cooking demo on the 9th please read the update below. We are still hosting (and very excited about it) but it will be down on the farm instead of up by the stand. Reach out, volunteer, support, donate and we will keep on keeping on. Thanks so much, Sasha Kanno Founder - Farmer |
