What's Happening on Farm Lot 59 Eating in Season: Pesto The name pesto comes from the term pestle, meaning to pound or to crush.  So, if you are feeling brave this summer, try making your next pesto using a mortar and pestle. The amplified aromas and flavors using this method will blow your mind!   Pesto is one of those special recipes that is always better when it is made at home (store bought pesto has nothing on homemade).  It's fairly easy and there are lots of spins you can put on it to make it your very own!   Breaking the norms Although pesto is most commonly made from basil, it can be made with all sorts of leafy greens, such as carrot tops, arugula, swiss chard, radish leaves, beet greens, nasturtium leaves, or a mix of all.  No matter the season, if you have fresh flavorful greens, you can make delicious homemade pesto. Pesto recipes usually call for pine nuts and although, the subtle rich flavors of pine nuts are hard to beat, don't be deterred if you don't have any on hand.  You can use any kind of nut--almonds, walnuts, cashews, etc.--and each will bring their own flavor to your pesto. I like to add a half lemon squeezed into mine to add a bit of summer tang ;)   Check out this link to a fun Pesto Recipe from our friend, Chef Aliye.  She uses radish greens for the recipe, but of course you can substitute with your fresh basil!   Order Your Farm Box Today Farm Boxes are still available for purchase until the end of July. Easy to care for, Coreopsis, also called Tickseed, are perennials, but can be treated as annuals. They come in many heights & colors, some have dark centers. A member of the Asteraceae family, the blooms are similar to a daisy. It’s the state wildflower of Florida. Easy to grow coreopsis from seed or cuttings. Grow in full sun. Once they start blooming, remove (deadhead) spent flowers, to keep more coming. They do not need much fertilizer, but they do need regular watering. Garden Safety Tip: Caring for Pruners Are you spending a lot more time working in your garden since you’ve been stuck at home?  Us too!  Here are some great tips for caring for your pruning shears.   Keep pruners sharp! Sharp tools are safer than dull and they leave clean cuts which are healthier for the plant. Keep pruners clean and dry. Wipe after use or cutting diseased material, with bleach or 70% alcohol solution. Buy the best you can afford and take good care of your pruners - they can last for years! Only use your pruners to cut plant material smaller than your little finger.
